Sony has officially confirmed that its Horizon Zero Dawn live-action movie is on track to start filming in 2026, with a release planned for 2027. The update comes from a new court filing that also reveals the film already has a completed script.

The project has had a long road to the screen. Back in 2022, Sony had announced a Horizon live-action series for Netflix with The Umbrella Academy showrunner Steve Blackman at the helm. However, that series was quietly scrapped in 2024 after misconduct allegations surfaced against Blackman.

Then in January this year, during Sony’s CES presentation, the company confirmed a fresh start — a Horizon Zero Dawn feature film, this time in collaboration with Columbia Pictures, the studio behind Sony’s Uncharted (2022) and Gran Turismo (2023).

Horizon Movie Has a Finished Script, Director Hunt Underway

According to legal documents obtained by The Game Post, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, revealed that the Horizon Zero Dawn movie has a working script and that Sony is currently looking for a director.

“We are in development for a film based on Horizon in partnership with Columbia Pictures,” Qizilbash stated in a sworn declaration dated October 16. “We already have a working script and are actively searching for a director, with the goal of shooting the picture in 2026 and releasing it in 2027.”

Qizilbash also emphasized that Aloy, the red-haired protagonist of the Horizon games, will play a central role in the upcoming movie — calling her a “key icon” for PlayStation’s brand and a major part of its “franchise-building strategy.”

So far, Sony hasn’t announced any casting choices or a showrunner, which means those details are likely still in progress.

Part of a Growing PlayStation Cinematic Universe

The Horizon Zero Dawn film joins an expanding lineup of PlayStation Productions projects. Other titles currently in development or confirmed include Chad Stahelski’s Ghost of Tsushima film, a Days Gone movie by Oscar-nominated writer Sheldon Turner, Amazon’s God of War series, The Last of Us Season 3 on HBO/Max, a Gravity Rush film, a Helldivers 2 movie, and the Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime coming to Crunchyroll.

As for who could bring Aloy to life on the big screen — that’s still anyone’s guess. But one thing’s clear: Sony seems serious about turning its hit games into blockbuster films.
